There’s nothing quite like seeing Kyoto in autumn, and my first ride on the Sagano Romantic Train made it unforgettable. As the train winds along the Hozugawa River through Sagano and Arashiyama, forests, riverbanks, and hillsides burst into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.

Strolling through Kyoto’s crisp autumn streets, surrounded by the aroma of grilled fish and other cozy street foods, makes the season even more enchanting. To help you plan your visit and enjoy the best of the city’s autumn beauty, here’s your ultimate guide to Kyoto’s fall foliage.

When is the Best Time To Catch Kyoto’s Fall Foliage

In 2025, Kyoto’s peak autumn colors are expected to arrive later than usual, likely beginning in early December due to the warmer weather.

Based on previous years, the best time to see autumn foliage in Kyoto is typically from late November to early December.

Autumn leaves remain vibrant for 2–3 weeks, so even if your timing isn’t perfect, you can still enjoy beautiful scenery.
